STP, Rilo Kiley, and Lonnie Brooks

Looking ahead to the rest of the week, we see the return of Stone Temple Pilots to Charter One Pavilion, Rilo Kiley to The Riv in Chicago, and Blues legend Lonnie Brooks performs a post race concert this Saturday at Arlington Park in the burbs.

But the pick of the week is to see how Scott Weiland and Stone Temple Pilots fare. Fresh out of jail and ready to take the stage after serving a short DUI sentence, STP FINALLY returns together to Chicago. For a band that took the 90’s by storm, the real question is will they still have it together here in 2008 on Thursday night. That’s the bottom line of what everyone is thinking, but we feel once the hits start cranking, the fans at Charter One won’t remember what year it is. Whether he’s cruising thru the parking lot on a gold cart before the show or just bouncing all over the stage, you just never know what Scott Weiland may do next. But this show should not be missed. Tickets are still available so get them while you can. Might as well since Friday should be a short day heading into a holiday weekend, it seems like the right way to start it. Don’t you think?

Oh man, I was at the show back in the 90’s and remember seeing him cruising the parking lot in a golf cart. That’s crazy, I totally forgot about itt until you brought that up. It was hilarious, everyone was shocked to see him doing that. Love STP and cannot wait for tomorrow…

I saw Stone Temple Pilots this past weekend in Columbus, OH. Okay so they started a little late, not surprised. I’ll tell you guys that it was just like no time had past. Scott and the band sounded great, they played all theold hits I wanted to hear. It will definately be a night I won’t forget anytime soon. Nice to see them back together! Can’t wait for the Chicago show.

  3. MJ Says:

The concert was horrible. It was filled with off-beat tunes and several technical errors which caused them to stop. Also, they failed to have the projectors up, making it hard for anyone to see the stage.

  4. WM Says:

The show last night was horrible. Scott’s voice is shot, no stage presence like good old days and they totally mailed it in. This will be their last tour and vegas money says they won’t even finish this Summer ‘08 tour. Washed up

    STP … dead and bloated!

stp - good! damn good, as a matter of fact. the air was chilled but the GA crowd was warm and bubbly. the band sounded GREAT - really, it was blow the doors off good. i bought these tix on whim, had never been a huge fan but always liked the sound. now, i hope i can see them again soon.

mj, wm, and steve are out to lunch

Agree with MJ… off beat and frequent stops. Was excited that “Sex Type Thing” was played, however it started off strong and then lost its momentum. I kinda felt the whole show was like that. I was disappointed that there weren’t any big screen shots… Speaking of shots, I couldn’t stop laughing when the guy behind us said (after Scott W. talked about STP’s tracts) “yeah tracks on your arm”…. You can tell Scott hasn’t aged gracefully especially since his voice was pretty far gone.

  8. Greg Says:

I liked the show, they played a lot of studio songs that are hard to reproduce live. The guitar had some tech difficulties but s**t happens. They played some songs from Shangra la dee da that were not hits but awesome. Just to watch DeLeo play bass is worth the price of admission. STP always had great arrangements and musicianship, Weiland vocals were a bit strained at times (Sour Girl ouch) but overall good for first tour in years…

I had always wanted to see STP and never had so I was excited. I thought the set list was pretty good, I heard just about every song I wanted to hear and a couple of unexpecteds. I would have liked to hear “Still Remains” off of “Purple”- one of my favorites, but was not surprised they didn’t play it. The technical problems didn’t bother me (shit happens) but the omission of the projected images did, being that I was in the grandstands. Scott has been one of my favorite vocalists but I have to agree with some of the earlier bloggers that his voice was certainly not what it used to be. Sometimes seeming off key and sometimes even sounding kind of week. I still love him though and hope perhaps he could regain some of the strength his voice used to have in the future. So I say “Rock On” STP. Rock and roll relies as much on feeling as it does on anything technical and I felt pretty damn good after the show.

I was eager to see STP after all these years - but they unfortunately turned out to be yet another aging rock act that probably shouldn’t be back together. The guys here are right on - lots of technical issues, flat guitar note bends, Weiland was out of breath for most of the show and coulnd’t keep up with his lyrics. My biggest disappointment however was the crowd - WAY too many loser drunk hillbillies in the crowd for me.

XRT - give a shout out to the best rock band touring today - Gov’t Mule with Warren Haynes coming to Navy Pier on July 14th. Go see some real guitar driven rock and roll with the MULE!!!

I thought STP was fantastic! Every song performed was perfect, just as I remember. We were sitting in the grandstand and could not see the stage that well, but we could hear just fine. I have been to other concerts at Charter One, and it is up to the band if they want to use the screens or not. That was not a glitch, STP didn’t want to use the screens, like Godsmack when they were here last year, yet Buckcherry at that same concert used the screens. As far as instruments, there was only one time when they had to stop at the very beginning because a guitar wasn’t working and had to be changed. After that, they never stopped till the end - 1 1/2 hours later. The only downside of the whole evening was the weather. We froze out butts off. But STP was worth it.

I thought the show was excellent and a great set list. However I had seen a set list on the web from a previous show and they played an encore of dead and bloated. I was disappointed that they didn’t do that, but the crowd just started walking away while the PA was playing the intro thing (where did Mary go and where’s my last cigarette, etc).
I too would have liked to have seen the screens on either side of the stage show some close-ups, but I thought the sound was good and enjoyed the show immensely. The screen behind them had some really nice trippy colors etc. I had forgotten how many great songs they had, since the only ones that ever get airplay these days are Plush and interstate love song (both over-played).
    wicked garden whoo hoo!!!

  13. Skippy Says:

Rilo Kiley played an incredible set. They played the best songs from Under The Blacklight, their most recent release, (Close Call, Moneymaker, Dreamworld, Breaking Up, 15, and Silver Lining - Dejalo not included unfortunately) as well as nine songs from their previous two CDs. Jenny Lewis is an absolutely remarkable singer. Her captivating presence in the concert setting however does not detract from the vituosity of the others players. Rilo Kiley can play it live - the whole is greater than the sum of the parts/band synergy.

I didn’t like either of the opening acts (Nik Freitas, The Spinto Band).

  14. Kim Says:

STP was great after a slow start. As mentioned earlier, I wished the big screens were up and running because it was difficult to see them. Overall, I thought the show was good, crowd loved it and despite cold weather it was hot at Charter One. By the way, Charter One is one of the best newer places to see a concert in the city, great music combined with the views of the city….AWESOME!

  15. Ellen Kramer Says:

Rilo Kiley is always a fun time, as Marty Lennartz said when he introduced the show- the whole group just has a tremendous amount of talent and we were lucky to have them with us Saturday night. Jenny Lewis not only has one of the prettiest voices, but she also can entertain by strumming multiple guitars, pounding keyboards, shaking tambourines while always simultaneously bopping her long red hair. In addition, the every member of Rilo Kiley contributes musically their aesthetic pleasing, fun, and captivating performances.

  16. Katy Says:

Like pp said, Rilo Kiley put on a great show. Jenny Lewis is a dynamic front person. The entire band put on a great show, everything was spot on.

  17. Bill Says:

It was great to see STP live since I never saw them before but was always a big fan. Scott Weiland’s voice didn’t sound good on the high notes. I think he needs to slow down the partying if he wants to sing still. He was smoking onstage which I’m sure didn’t help. Most of the songs sounded good (musically) although they had a lot of problems at the beginning of the show with equipment. I figured some of this just had to do with this only being their 2nd show. Hopefully they’ll get it together more for the future shows.

  18. Suzie Says:

Rilo Kiley always puts on a great show and I have truly enjoyed listening to Under the Blacklight. RK is an under appreciated band who truly connects with it’s audience when playing live. I can’t wait to see them again.
